A Strategy for the Future Use of the Radio Spectrum in the UK
Second Edition May 1996 - Maritime

5.1 Maritime Mobile Services

There are numerous systems, providing for both national and international radiocommunication needs, being operated within the maritime mobile service. The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) identifies certain radio equipment to be used within maritime mobile service for safety of life applications. The Agency continues to offer the necessary protection from interference to the frequency bands where GMDSS systems are used. Initiatives are being taken to improve the spectrum efficiency by adopting new technology and, where necessary, re-planning the radio spectrum, whilst meeting the international requirements for maritime safety applications.

The wide ranging demands of the maritime community are also being addressed with a view to assigning or re-assigning spectrum to new radiocommunications systems. The operation of maritime services in the VHF band will be examined in the context of World Radiocommunications Conference in 1997 to assess the possibility of introducing more spectrum efficient technology. In the VHF band and elsewhere, in addition to the continuing demand for voice communications, there is an increasing demand for data communications and radiodetermination.

It is expected that assignment of frequencies to some of the services will managed under Spectrum Management Organisations. In other cases, where there is a synergy with land mobile service, local processing by District Offices will be considered.
