RADIO AUTHORITY RECEIVES FOURTEEN APPLICATIONS FOR NEW REGIONAL ILR LICENCE FOR NORTH-EAST ENGLAND

The Radio Authority's closing date for receipt of applications for the new regional Independent Local Radio (ILR) licence for the North-East region of England covering most population centres within the former metropolitan counties of Tyne & Wear and Cleveland and neighbouring parts of the county of Durham together with some parts of south Northumberland and North Yorkshire was today (10 March). Fourteen applications have been submitted for this licence on the FM (VHF) waveband. The adult population of the area within which this new service should be received is around 2.0 million.

The Authority will need to conduct at least one 'public interest test' in respect of an application for this licence which is affected by the ownership provisions of the Broadcasting Act 1996. Full details will be issued shortly.

The details of those applying are listed below together with a brief outline of each group's proposed programme format:

  • CRASH FM (ALTERNATIVE & ROCK LTD.) - 55 Cleveland Terrace Darlington Co. Durham DL3 7HS (contact: Duncan Bannantyne 1325 356677 or David Cousins 181 995 1507 an alternative rock and dance station for 15 -34s in the North East;

  • FUN RADIO (CAPITAL RADIO NORTH EAST LTD.) - Capital Radio plc 30 Leicester Square London WC2H 7 (contact: Richard Park 171 766 6106 or David Mansfield 171 766 6240 a music-led interactive service targeting children aged 4-14 and their young parents featuring new fun music with news information and features designed to entertain its audience;
  • GALAXY FM (CHRYSALIS RADIO NORTH EAST LTD.) - Chrysalis Radio The Chrysalis Building Bramley Road London W10 6SP (contact: Mark Flanagan 117 901 101 or Nick Brown 191 273 2773 a fun upbeat lifestyle-led dance station playing a mix of contemporary and classic dance music together with news and information that matters to its target audience of 15-29 year olds;
  • ICE FM (ICE NORTH EAST LTD.) - Ice Productions Polar Studios Stoddart Street Shieldfield Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 1AN (contact: Bill Midgley 191 244 2204 or Gordon McNamee 171 706 1967 a dance and 'dance related' music station for the youth of the North East at the forefront of new music trends and tastes with local youth information and regional national and international news;

Olaore 171 312 8505 the first commercial 24-hour news and newstalk station for the North East providing a mix of regional national and international news travel finance sports entertainment and weather;
  • N.E. ROCK (NORTHERN RADIO INITIATIVE LTD.) - 133 Chirton West View North Shields NE29 OEN (contact: Steve Askew or Robert Price 191 296 1917 the finest classic and contemporary rock indie and blues music with national and local news information sport entertainment news and arts related information;
  • THE POINT (GET THE POINT LTD.) - The Radio Partnership 7 Diamond Court Kenton Newcastle upon Tyne NE3 2EN (contact: Giles Squire or John Josephs 191 286 0 specialist in appeal a progressive and vital young dance and alternative music station offering 15-30 year olds a constantly evolving environment of youth culture: a real and relevant source of music entertainment and information for a generation disaffected and dissatisfied with the same old voices and choices;
  • ROCK 105 LTD. - Zenith North Ltd. 11 Floor Cale Cross House Pilgrim Street Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 6SU (contact: Peter Mitchell 191 261 77 a 24 music station featuring current and classic rock tracks from the past four decades designed primarily for a 25-44 audience;
  • ROUTE FM LTD. - 55 Broadway Vauxhall London SW8 1 (contact: Tom Steele 131 475 1202 or Jane Hill 1522 549900 today's country music complemented by a service of headline regional news weather and travel for the North-East;
  • STATE FM (NORTH EAST BROADCASTING CO. PLC) - The Eco-Centre Windmill Way Hebburn Tyne & Wear NE31 1SR (contact: Lorna Moran 191 261 6940 or Alan Mullett 1952 201179 a greater variety of MOR/AC music from the 60s to the present day relevant to the over 35 year age-group with a blend of stimulating lifestyle features and a daily news service that will give listeners the North East world in three minutes;
  • VIBE FM (NORTH EAST WIRELESS LTD.) - c/o Essex Radio Group Radio House Clifftown Road Southend on Sea Essex SS1 1SX (contact: Lord Redesdale 171 219 3438 or Rob van Pooss 1702 333711 a fresh fun and exciting classic and contemporary dance music station serving people in their teens and twenties across Tyne & Wear and Teesside;
  • VIRUS RADIO LTD. - PO Box 74 Blaydon NE16 3YX (contact: Pete Waterman 161 833 3630 or David Rogers 1865 381800 a sparkling new radio service featuring the very best of new music with interesting and provocative speech elements all clearly aimed at young people.
  • Copies of these applications will be available for public scrutiny in the reference sections of the main public libraries in Newcastle-upon-Tyne Sunderland Middlesbrough and Durham and at the Radio Authority's headquarters in London. The Authority welcomes public comments on the proposals put forward by the applicants and upon the tastes and requirements of listeners in this local area.     The Authority hopes to announce its decision about the award of the licence by the early Autumn.

    1. This is the second regional licence for North-East England to be advertised by the Radio Authority. The first North-East regional licence covering the same area as this was awarded to Century Radio which came on air in September 1994
