National

Classic FM the UK's first Independent National Radio station (INR1), began broadcasting a classical music service in September 1992. In April 1993, Virgin 1215 (INR2) went on-air with a rock music service. In February 1995, Talk Radio (INR3) began broadcasting a speech-based service. Talk Radio re-launched as talkSPORT in January 2000 with a sports-focused service.

Additional service licence

In October 1994 the Authority awarded its first 'additional service' licence to the sole applicant, Differential Corrections Inc. (DCI), transmitting as Focus FM. Additional Services make use of the spare capacity in an existing channel which is not used by the programme service. DCI is utilising the RDS (Radio Data System) sub-carrier of the INR1 service broadcasting on the FM (VHF) waveband. This service can only be received through subscription.
