Ofcom appointments to the Advisory Committee for England and Content Board

Ofcom today announced the appointments of the Chairman of the Advisory Committee for England and a non-executive member of the Content Board.

John Varney was appointed Chairman of the Advisory Committee for England on 1 July 2014. He was a member of the committee for over five years prior to his appointment as Chairman. Mary Ann Sieghart will join as a member of Ofcom’s Content Board from 1 September 2014.

John Varney
John Varney is the founder and director of Maximum Clarity, a consultancy that specialises in technology and its impacts. His previous roles include Chief Technology Officer for the BBC and Director of Technology for Granada. He is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Television Society, Governor at Manchester Metropolitan University and a Member of the Trustees Strategy Committee at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Mary Ann Sieghart
Mary Ann Sieghart is a journalist and broadcaster. She has held the position of Assistant Editor of The Times and worked for other media outlets including the Independent, Economist and Financial Times. She is a non-executive director of Henderson Smaller Companies Investment Trust and DLN Digital. She is also the Chair of the Social Market Foundation and sits on the Council of Tate Modern.



  1. Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, with responsibilities across television, radio, telecommunications, wireless communications and postal services.
  2. The Advisory Committee for England advises Ofcom about the interests and opinions, in relation to communications and postal matters, of persons living in England.
  3. The Content Board is the committee of the main Ofcom Board with delegated responsibility for TV and radio content issues, including setting and enforcing quality and standards. It includes members who represent each of the four nations of the UK.
