Object-based media

06 September 2021

Within our Emerging Technology Programme, Ofcom has identified new technologies which are proving to be important in the development of various sectors. Within broadcasting, one such identified technology is Object Based Media (OBM).

In addition to enriching the experience of consumers through personalisation, OBM impacts other areas that are of regulatory interest to Ofcom including, for example, accessibility. We therefore commissioned a report to improve our understanding of this technology, its benefits to consumers and any barriers to adoption.

The report focuses on the technology, consumer, commercial and compliance/regulatory trends in Object Based Media with a focus on developments in the UK. It was written by Macroblock Limited (represented by Elfed Howells) and the School of Digital Arts (SODA), Manchester Metropolitan University (represented by David Jackson).
