Restricted services are radio services with small coverage areas that are used to broadcast at events, or within a particular establishment or other locations in the UK. Examples include:

  • dedicated radio services for religious observances such as Ramadan;
  • radio services for hospitals and universities;
  • drive-in movie soundtracks; and
  • commentary for events.

Application window for 2025 period of high demand

The one-week application window is open for anyone wishing to apply to hold a restricted service licence (RSL) to broadcast during 2025’s recognised period of high demand (any dates between Monday 24 February and Friday 4 April 2025 inclusive), which includes the period of Ramadan. The window closes at 5pm on Friday 23 August 2024.

Anyone applying should ensure they read the up to date guidance note and use the current application form, both published above. Please note that just the application fee is required to accompany an application (do not pay licence fees at this stage).
