Ofcom has a statutory duty to promote and research media literacy. The main way we fulfil this duty is through our Making Sense of Media programme, which aims to help improve the online skills, knowledge and understanding of children and adults in the UK.

To support our wider media literacy work and Making Sense of Media programme, Ofcom commissioned qualitative research into the use of immersive technology and immersive platforms. We spoke to 30 users of immersive technology via in-home observations and interviews, as well as parents of children aged 5-12 through 2 x 90-minute focus groups. Participants were recruited from across the UK and included people from a mix of life stages, socio-economic groups, genders and ethnicities.

The research explores the way that immersive technology is currently used, how it may be a part of people’s lives in the future, and the emerging media literacy implications in this arena.
