BBC Proposals for coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games

  • Dechrau: 24 Ionawr 2012
  • Statws: Ar gau
  • Diwedd: 14 Chwefror 2012

The BBC has acquired non-exclusive broadcast rights for the London 2012 Olympic Games, which are listed events for the purpose of section 97 of the Broadcasting Act 1996. Many of the events will be shown on the BBC's channels, which are qualifying services for the purposes of section 98 of the Act.

In order to provide comprehensive coverage, the BBC plans to make all other Olympic events available through additional streams. These additional streams would be made available on the BBC's website, and, in whole or part, through satellite, cable and digital terrestrial broadcasts. As these additional streams may not be receivable by the requisite 95% of the population, the BBC has sought Ofcom's consent for the relevant listed events to be broadcast.

In accordance with the Ofcom Code on Sports and Other Listed Events and Part IV of the Broadcasting Act 1996 Ofcom invites broadcasters and other interested parties to comment on the proposals by Tuesday 14 February 2012.

Comments should be sent to:

Rowan Armstrong
Ofcom
Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road
London SE1 9HA (email: rowan.armstrong@ofcom.org.uk).

Unless confidentiality is requested, all comments will be available to view on Ofcom's website after the consultation has closed.

The rules and legislation for such a request are outlined in the Ofcom Code on Sports and Other Listed and Designated Events (the Code), and in Part IV of the Broadcasting Act 1996. The Code is available on the Ofcom website at http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/binaries/broadcast/other-codes/ofcom_code_on_sport.pdf.
