Invitation to apply for improvements to existing coverage and coverage extensions for community radio services

Following on from our statement on ‘Community Radio: future licensing and technical policy’, published on 28 April 2017, this document invites applications for changes to the coverage of existing community radio services. Community radio services can apply for an improvement to existing coverage within the current licensed coverage area or, in specific circumstances, for an extension of the licensed coverage area.

Ofcom is inviting applications from licensees that already hold a community radio licence from Ofcom. No areas are excluded on the basis of frequency availability, but this does not indicate that an improvement to existing coverage or a coverage extension will be possible in every area. Community radio is licensed using different frequencies to the extent they are available and unused by other radio services in different places, and is dependent on whether services cause harmful outgoing interference.

This document sets out guidelines and procedures for submission of applications.

The closing-date for receipt of applications for improvements to existing coverage is 23:59 hrs on 31 July 2018.

The closing-date for receipt of applications for coverage extensions is 23:59 hrs on 18 September 2018.
