Around three and a half million people have switched their landline or broadband provider over the last two years, with new analysis suggesting many out-of-contract customers could save over £100 in the process.
Ofcom research suggests that many out-of-contract customers who take broadband, landline and pay-TV from the same provider could save over £100 a year by switching.[1] One in three of these ‘triple play’ customers were out of contract last year.[2]
Our data also shows that communications services are affordable for most people. But 4% of telecoms customers missed a payment last quarter – as many struggle with the rising cost of living. Additionally, one in ten said they made changes to a service (12%) or reduced spend elsewhere (10%), and some (7%) cancelled a service.[3]
How to save money
Ofcom has launched a new online portal providing information and advice to everyone wishing to save money and get the most from their communications services. The Consumer Hub at ofcom.org.uk/onyourside offers a wealth of money-saving tips, help with common service problems and routes to complain.
There is also straightforward advice on switching mobile, landline or broadband company, which has never been simpler. A ‘one touch’ process means you only need to speak to the new broadband or landline provider – not your current one. More than 300 providers are signed up to the process, making it easier to shop around for a better deal.
Since the process was launched for landline and broadband customers two years ago today, nearly 3.5 million people have taken advantage of it.[4] Visit the Consumer Hub for a step-by-step guide and a free broadband service checker showing what types of broadband and speeds are available at your address.
For mobile, it’s just as simple. Just text ‘PAC’ to 65075, with no need to speak to the current provider. Visit the Hub for details, and for Ofcom’s free Map Your Mobile tool, which reveals the best mobile coverage and performance in your postcode.[5]
Natalie Black, Ofcom’s Group Director, Infrastructure and Connectivity, said: “We know that many people feel worried about their bills creeping up over the next few months, but with a few simple steps some customers could achieve big savings.
“Our advice to everyone with a broadband, mobile, pay-TV or landline contract is to check whether you’re in or out of contract, compare the offers out there, and if right for you then switch and save. All the advice you need is at ofcom.org.uk/onyourside.[6]”
