Accessibility and European works

04 December 2015

Ofcom is required to encourage service providers to ensure that their services are progressively made more accessible to people with disabilities affecting their sight or hearing, or both. The Digital Economy Act 2017 introduced new provisions into the Act enabling the Secretary of State to make regulations to impose requirements on providers of ODPS for the purpose of ensuring that their services are accessible to people with disabilities in particular, people with disabilities affecting their sight or hearing. We are working with the Government  to introduce these new provisions.

The amendments to Section 4A of the Communications Act 2003 in 2020, introduced new obligations on some ODPS providers to ensure that a proportion of programming on their service are European Works. We will be consulting on new guidance on this obligation later in 2021.
