The Media Act 2024 introduced a new online availability and prominence regime for public service broadcaster (PSB) TV players distributed on connected TV platforms (termed television selection services under the Act).
This new regime requires those television selection services designated by the Secretary of State to ensure that public service broadcaster TV players that have been designated, and their content, are available, prominent, and easily accessible.
One of Ofcom’s responsibilities is to designate the commercial PSB TV players, known as ‘internet programme services’ (IPS), which satisfy the conditions set out in the legislation to benefit from the new regime. BBC iPlayer will be automatically designated under the Act.
Last year we consulted on and published a statement about the methods we will apply in assessing which IPS should be designated. Today, we are publishing an application form that is intended to assist IPS providers with the process. This form sets out the information and supporting documentation that should be provided by IPS providers for the purposes of their application to Ofcom.
To ensure transparency for stakeholders, we will consult on our proposed designation decisions and following consultation, final designation decisions will be issued.
