This statement sets out the decisions we have made to enable the licence-exempt use of higher power Wi-Fi in the 6 GHz band under Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) control.
What we have decided - in brief
It sets out our final decisions on the registration process, conditions and restrictions applicable to AFC service providers, and the technical requirements for licence-exempt Wi-Fi devices operating under AFC control.
Our decision will support more intensive and efficient use of the 6 GHz band by enabling higher-performance indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi, new applications, and additional fixed wireless access capacity. AFC provides a flexible spectrum management mechanism that can also be used to restrict Wi-Fi operation in the 6585–7125 MHz band where future mobile services are deployed in high-density areas.
We intend to invite applications from prospective AFC service providers from 1 September 2026.
We will also make Regulations in Autumn 2026 to give effect to our decisions.
