Here you will find information about licence costs, how to pay your fee, and more

For information on paying for your licence, see How to make a payment to Ofcom.

Business Radio Light Licences (Simple UK, Simple Site, Suppliers Light) cost £75 for a duration of five years.

Business Radio Technically Assigned and Area Defined licence costs are subject to the technical details requested during your application.

The fees can be affected by factors such as:

  • Location
  • Frequency band
  • Coverage

You can use our fee calculator to estimate your licence cost.

  1. We recommend that you open the calculator with no other Excel sheets open as this may cause issues
  2. If you encounter any issues when using the calculator please report them via the webform.

Failing to pay by the due date for an existing licence will mean you are in breach of your licence terms and conditions. If your licence is revoked but you continue to use your apparatus, you may be operating illegally. Ofcom may inspect revoked licences and take enforcement action if unlicensed use is established. Any payments made to Ofcom following licence revocation will not be credited to your account.

Request for Payment:

Your Request for Payment will be sent out during the first week of your payment month, and you will have until the end of that month to make payment.

Intention to Revoke (Notice of Proposed Revocation):

If the payment date passes and we have not received your fees, your licence will go into revocation, and you will be sent a warning letter known as an Intention to Revoke.

The Intention to Revoke will also include a copy of the request for payment for you to make payment against.

Payment Confirmation:

Once payment has been received, you will receive a Payment Confirmation.

Notice of Licence Revocation:

If payment is not received by the date stated on the Intention to Revoke, your licence will be revoked. You will receive a Notice of Licence Revocation to confirm this.

Purchase orders

Ofcom’s policy regarding purchase order numbers is on every request for payment issued:

  • Ofcom cannot quote purchase order numbers on requests for payment. A purchase order (PO) is a commercial document issued by a buyer to a seller, detailing the exact merchandise or services to be provided from the seller. Sending a PO constitutes a legal offer to buy products or services.
  • It is a mandatory requirement for anyone operating a licensable radio system to have a valid licence, so this does not constitute a legal offer to buy a product or service from Ofcom.

If we receive a PO in response to a request for payment, it will not be accepted, and you will receive the above response.
