What is a Regulated EPG?
Broadly speaking, an Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) is a service that consists of the listing and/or promotion of programmes included in any one or more programme services (the providers of which are, or include, persons other than the provider of the EPG) and provides access to them. The full definition is in section 310(8) of the Communications Act 2003.
Any EPG being provided by a provider that held a Television Licensable Content Service (TLCS) or Digital Television Additional Service (DTAS) licence for it immediately before the end of the Brexit transition period became a regulated EPG.
On 16 June 2026, the Regulated Electronic Programme Guide (Prescribed Description and Transitional Arrangements) Regulations 2026 (the ‘2026 regulations’) come into force, providing for additional EPGs, falling within a prescribed description, to be regulated.
Under the 2026 regulations, some additional EPGs require a licence from 1 December 2026 and others from 1 June 2027.
