Innovative use of spectrum

In this consultation we set out our proposed approach to authorising Wi-Fi and mobile services in the 6 GHz band. This includes a proposal to authorise standard power Wi-Fi in Lower 6 GHz under the control of an AFC database (subject to industry demand), and a proposal to authorise low power indoor Wi-Fi in Upper 6 GHz, with mobile coming into the Upper 6 GHz band at a later stage.

This statement sets out the decisions we have made to enable the licence-exempt use of higher power Wi-Fi in the 6 GHz band under Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) control. It sets out our final decisions on the registration process, conditions and restrictions applicable to AFC service providers, and the technical requirements for licence-exempt Wi-Fi devices operating under AFC control.

Prisons, power stations and airports will be able to guard against hostile drone activity in the skies above them, under Ofcom plans to introduce a new drone detection radar licence announced today (16 July 2026).

Through this Call for Input (CFI), we want to hear from innovators, researchers, spectrum users, and other stakeholders about what Ofcom should do next to support wireless innovation and help the UK remain a leading place to develop, trial, and deploy new wireless technologies.

The focus of this consultation is to set out our proposed high density areas and our proposals to ensure that mobile operators will be able to deploy in those areas without significant constraint from incumbent users.

Ofcom has today proposed the next steps in plans that would see mobile masts and Wi-Fi routers in different locations, for the first time, be able to use parts of the same frequency band to transmit their signals, unlocking significant benefits for households, businesses and the wider UK economy.

This statement covers our decision to introduce (from early 2026) a new short notice, short duration licence type in 2320-2340 MHz.
