General
Under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949 a licence, issued by the Secretary of State, is required before any person may establish or use any station for wireless telegraphy or install or use any apparatus for wireless telegraphy in any place in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man (UK) or on any British registered vessel.
The temporary licence is available to visitors to this country for up to six months validity (e.g. where the visitor is operating mobile on a motoring/touring holiday, staying in temporary accommodation).
The licence is not renewable and no UK callsign will be allocated.
If your stay in the UK is for longer than six months or if you are a frequent visitor to the UK you may apply for a full Amateur Radio Licence.

Annex 1 gives a list of countries that currently have a reciprocal licensing arrangement with the UK.

When you have completed this form please check before posting that you have enclosed the following: Cheque, Eurocheque, Postal Order or International Money Order for £15.00 sterling made payable to Radio Licensing Centre and crossed "A/C Payee".
The following International Money Orders are acceptable: USA International Money Orders in Sterling; Canadian International Money Orders in Sterling; International Bankers' Drafts, drawn against a British Bank bearing that Bank's Sort Code, in Sterling.

A copy of your current licence, showing the call sign issued to you in your own country plus any further documentation requested. If your licence does not show a current expiry date, a copy of the latest renewal receipt should also be enclosed. If you do not enclose the correct documentation your application will be delayed .

Importing radio equipment
From 1 May 2000, the restriction on manufacture and importation of single amateur frequency band 28 MHz - 29 MHz equipment has been removed. However, it still remains an offence to adapt it to operate on CB bands.
