The VDSL Workshop held in London on 16th January and hosted jointly by the Radiocommunications Agency (RA); the DTI Communications and Information Industries Directorate (CIID) and OFTEL, identified the range of radio services that may be affected by emissions from VDSL systems operating in the range 1.6 to 30 MHz. Delegates were invited to comment on possible ways forward in determining suitable limits on emissions from VDSL and other technologies in this frequency range.
Following feedback from delegates, the Agency in agreement with CIID and OFTEL, proposes to set up a Technical Working Group (TWG) to examine the protection requirements of radio services and determine the threat from VDSL systems. The scope of the working group will also include Power Line Technology (PLT) networks operating within the same frequency range. It is anticipated that the TWG will draw representation from all interested parties including users of the radio spectrum, network operators and manufacturing industry. A majority of workshop delegates also endorsed continued UK support for European initiatives to develop a harmonised approach to the regulation of emissions from telecommunications networks. The Agency therefore intends to maintain its participation within relevant international forums, in particular CEPT Project Team SE35, CENELEC, ETSI and CISPR to try to reach agreement wherever possible, on common standards for the protection of radio services. The TWG will inform the Agency's work in these forums.
