Martin Campbell - Director of Programming & Advertising Regulation

Martin Campbell was appointed Director of Programming and Advertising at the Radio Authority in August 1998 after three years as Managing Editor of Talk Radio, the UK’s sole national commercial speech station.

He has been in commercial radio for over 25 years, both in front of, and behind, the microphone.

He was for four years Head of Talks at BRMB in Birmingham, and when Head of Features at Radio Trent in Nottingham he produced commercial radio’s first, and thus far only, situation comedy series, which starred Bill Maynard.

He is a keen boxing fan and fulfilled an ambition from childhood when he was the commentator for the World Heavyweight Championship bout between Muhammad Ali and Bradford’s Richard Dunn in Munich for Pennine Radio (the Pulse).

He has fronted daily phone-ins, music shows and news programmes, having been trained as a journalist and worked in newspapers for eight years before entering radio. For four years he was programme Director for Allied Radio’s group of stations in Surrey and Sussex, including Mercury FM.

He has been actively involved in radio training over many years, both as Head of News at the National Broadcasting School and principal lecturer at Cornwall’s PostGraduate Diploma Course in Broadcast Journalism.

His interests include roots music and walking.
