He moved to the commercial radio sector to start up Moray Firth Radio - a unique station in its day covering a vast patch with a small population. He remained there as Managing Director until October 2000 when he left to become Chairman, and to pursue other interests. In that time Moray Firth built up quite a reputation, not least as Sony UK small station of the year for an unprecedented four years in a row. Thomas took Moray Firth through the transition from community business to being part of Scottish Radio Holdings group.

He has been involved in many industry activities including on the Association of Independent Radio Companies (AIRC) and Commercial Radio Companies Association (CRCA) Boards, as well as on the Council of the Radio Academy.

Thomas is well known in the local area where amongst other things he has helped to stimulate and encourage a range of small community stations. He was President of the Chamber of Commerce and is involved in a variety of local organisations from the Highland Festival to the University of the Highlands & Islands project. He is a Fellow of the Radio Academy and of the Institute of Management.

Thomas graduated from Oxford University in 1968 with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He is married with three grown up sons and lives in Inverness, near Culloden Moor, where his garden feeds the local deer population. He has a collection of old radios (most of which don't work) and clocks (which do) and a tatty 50-year old convertible Daimler (which works some of the time!)

Since leaving commercial radio management Thomas has been developing a portfolio of activities which include PR and media relations, media workshops for business as well as the Chairmanship of 'Media Support' a Scottish based NGO and Consultancy which has a number of projects and consultancies overseas from Mozambique to Afganistan and China.
